HISTORY of Yogakshemam

It was in the early 1990s that the Namboodiris of Bangalore—though not a sizeable number--felt the need for a common platform to be able to meet, identify and interact with their community members spread over the city. Their quest and aspirations resulted in Yogakshemam, Bangalore. In 1995, Yogakshemam, Bangalore, was registered with the Registrar of Societies, Karnataka, as a non-profitable, social and cultural organisation. Since then, apart from providing members a venue for interaction, its various community development activities have benefited many.


The aim of Yogakshemam, Bangalore, is to provide an opportunity for the community to meet, know each other, interact and present their views and talents. Yogakshemam also aims to work for the overall development of the Namboodiri community in Bangalore. Of the estimated 700 Namboodiri families in the city, Yogakshemam has more than 500 families under its umbrella. Thanks to the IT boom, Yogakshemam has had the opportunity to embrace many more families into its fold and we hope to keep the numbers rolling.


As a registered body, Yogakshemam is governed by an Executive Committee comprising five office bearers and 11 committee members. The office bearers are the President, the Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and the Treasurer. The 5 office bearers and the 7 committee members are elected by the members during the Annual General Meeting. The rest of the committee members are nominated by the Executive Committee during its first meeting. Of the four nominated members, one acts as the Internal Auditor of Yogakshemam, Bangalore. The outgoing President and Secretary will be permanent invitees for the Executive Committee meetings in their capacity as Ex-officio President and Ex-Officio Secretary respectively. The tenure of each Executive Committee is two years. The Executive Committee meets at regular intervals and discusses matters of relevance and takes decisions. The Executive Committee’s decisions are final in most cases, except in the case of amendments of bye-laws, major financial and policy decisions etc, which are to be put to the AGM for approval.
